To get that opportunity she’s getting help from a 2-year-old program at Jefferson Community & Technical College that identifies international students in Jefferson County Public Schools and provides them with the encouragement and tools to get more education. The program is called Next Step and in each of the past two years it has identified about two dozen promising high school sophomores and juniors who speak English as a second language and trained them over the summer in how to get into a school, obtain financial aid and succeed in higher education.
