TitleConference Looks at the Needs of ESL Students
BodyFrom: OELA Newsline - March 9

The Oregonian reports on a "Closing the Achievement Gap" conference at
Portland State University in Oregon that showcased many programs that have
had success with students learning English as a second language (ESL) for
others to replicate.

One such program is Beaverton School District's Welcome Center. The
Welcome Center, with its multilingual staff, assists immigrants with adjusting
to the district and conducts entrance tests to assess students' English
language proficiency. The staff also trains the district's teachers in the most
recent methods to reach English language learners. The Welcome Center
team recommended that educators use research-proven techniques with
English-language learners such as:

1. Students should be taught high-level vocabulary and content.
2. Teachers should meet the cultural and social needs of both the child and
his/her family.
3. Teachers should regularly measure the progress of ELLs and use the
results to adjust their teaching.
