Body | From: "coflt" The FY 2004 Budget that was passed by Congress in January included a provision to establish a 17-member commission to recommend a program that will expand the opportunities for students in higher education in the US to study abroad, with an emphasis placed on studying in developing countries. The new program is the vision of the late Senator Paul Simon (D-IL). His proposal envisions fellowships of up to $7,000 for 500,000 students per year to study abroad for a summer or a school year. United States Civilian Linguist Reserve Corps Feasibility Study The Intelligence Authorization Act for FY2003 directed the Secretary of Defense through the National Security Education Program (NSEP) to prepare a report on the feasibility of establishing a Civilian Linguist Reserve Corps (CLRC). The CLRC would be comprised of individuals with advanced levels of proficiency in foreign language. The report outlines the following: a) Consideration of the Military Reserve Model b) CLRC Structure and Operations c) Requirements for levels of proficiency and performance of duties d) Requirements for skill maintenance and training requirements For a copy of the full report, please visit www.ndu.edu/nsep. Foreign Service Institute - Language Continuum The Language Continuum is a tool for Foreign Service Officers, Foreign Service Specialists and eligible family members to help them plan a career-long integrated approach to language learning and use in order to build up an advanced level of language specialists. It provides an overview of language learning opportunities and a "roadmap" through training and multiple assignments for individual language learners to acquire, maintain, and improve their language skills to a high level of proficiency.
