TitleOn-line Course “Educating English Learners”
Body
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is pleased to announce “Educating English Learners,” an online course designed to support preK–12 educators—teachers, support staff, and administrators—who are making decisions as to program and staffing designs, support services and resources, and educational approaches for English learners. This course will be taught by Dr. Margaret Hawkins, a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin. Her professional interests include socio-cultural approaches to languages and literacies, teacher education (particularly around issues for English learners), and family/school/community partnerships. Based on a socio-cultural view of schooling for English learners, the course draws on the lives and experiences of 5 students from diverse backgrounds in different locales to illuminate issues that impact the language, literacy and academic development of English learners in schools.Through viewing videos of students, readings, collaborative discussions and activities, course participants will engage in analyses of issues, and applications of course content to their specific sites and contexts.

The course will run January 18–May 6, 2011.It is possible to take the course for graduate credit or at a discounted rate without credit.Groups of teachers participating together from the same district may also receive a discount.
