Body
Medieval and Early Modern Islamic Iberia
An NEH Four-Week Summer Seminar for School Teachers
July 18-August 12, 2011

This four-week National Endowment Summer Seminar for School Teachers conducted in Spanish and held in Spain covers the cultural history of Islamic Iberia. It seeks to provide a series of unique cultural perspectives on both the role of Islam and Islamic culture in European history, as well as upon the complex multicultural civilization that flourished for nearly a millennium in what is present-day Spain and Portugal. The seminar integrates the study of Islam in its western Iberian context to understand a crucial but little-known period for Americans in European, but especially Spanish, history that continues to inform the historical present. The travel itinerary includes visits to Valencia, Granada, Seville, Córdoba, Toledo, Xátiva, Teruel, and Albarracín, among other places. NEH provides a $3,300 stipend to successful applicants.
