Utes, other tribes reconnect to culture

MaryLee Longhair is worried about the future of Ute language and culture. That’s why she attended the 11th annual Shoshonean Language Reunion, being held in Fort Duchesne, Utah, through today. This year marks the first time the language conference has been hosted by the Ute Indian Tribe of Utah’s Uintah Basin.

The gathering was organized by Venita Taveport, language program director for the Ute Indian Tribe. In addition to the main gathering each morning, there were afternoon workshops dealing with such issues as how to encourage more tribal involvement in traditional language and culture.
