Hardy Elementary School in San Diego’s College Area makes a big deal out of reclassification. On Thursday, 21 students — about 33 percent of the campus English learners — received medals and certificates during a ceremony that celebrated the accomplishment.

“Our message is not, ‘Yeah, English is the best language in the world.’ Our message is, ‘Yeah, you know two languages, you rock,’” Principal Kathy Wolfe told the students.

San Diego Unified has been working to improve the way it educates English learners since the state issued a scathing audit of its program five years ago. The district was found out of compliance in several areas, from denying students access to core curriculum to failing to monitor students after they are reclassified.
