Latin American Studies Summer Institute for High School Teachers
Latin American Film in the 9-12 Classroom

Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee’s Latin American Studies Interdisciplinary Program will collaborate to offer a week-long institute on Latin America for Tennessee high school teachers. The institute will be held June 6-11, 2010 on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville. Teachers will study different aspects of Latin America through feature films and documentaries with specialized faculty from Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee- Knoxville. Enriching their knowledge of Latin America, teachers will begin to develop curricular plans for increased coverage of Latin America in their respective schools. The institute is intended primarily for Tennessee high school teachers in Spanish and Social Studies; however teachers from surrounding states will also be considered. Teachers will take part in groups of two or more from each school, with around 12 schools or districts participating. Selected teams of teachers will work together to incorporate material relevant to Latin America into their high school curriculums. During the week, faculty from Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee will be available for workshops and mentoring so that teachers maximize their experience.

Housing and a per diem allowance for food will be provided.
Deadline for submission of application is March 26, 2010.
