TitleEducating Latino students: A Guide to Successful Practice (1998)
Body

Publisher: Technomic Publishing Company, Inc

This book is designed to assist readers in expanding their knowledge base about quality practices for Latino students' education. It combines theory and practice as it suggests best practices for educating Latino students in
grades Pre-K to 12. The first half of the book discusses administrative and pedagogical practices in elementary grades, while the second half talks about the demographics and issues of Latino students in middle and secondary levels of schooling.

One chapter about supportive learning environments provides the theoretical framework for language, literacy development, and learning to support its assertions about the importance of respect for the students' first language while encouraging the acquisition of the second. The students described in the chapter were studying the animals of the Sonoran Desert as part of their science curriculum. Components of the unit included a web with the students' brainstorming ideas, assessment of the students' prior knowledge,
and the collection of information from books, field trips, and interviews with experts. The chapter describes the organization of the students' investigations and offers examples of student work. Reflection and assessment strategies are outlined.
