CULTURAL EXCHANGE | A program links Chinese students with area elementary schools

Lijun “Jun-jun” Lu is one of seven Chinese interns working in Eugene and Springfield elementary schools through a new partnership between the University of Oregon and Soochow University, in Lu’s home town of Suzhou, a city of about 2 million people in China’s Yangtze River Delta region.

“The design of the internship program is to have one master teacher for each student to help them get used to the American education system and eventually help them develop their teaching skills and get used to the culture,” said program organizer Yifang Zhang, coordinator of the East Asia Initiative in the UO’s department of international affairs.

The program is offered through the UO’s Center for Applied Second Language Studies, which has had a similar partnership for several years with a Japanese university, Zhang said.
