According to the French linguist Claude Hagège, twenty-five languages die each year; if this rate of decline continues, half the world’s current languages will disappear by 2100.

In his new book “On the Death and Life of Languages,” published in September 2009, Hagège argues passionately that we need to preserve the diversity of the world’s tongues – and he explains what is lost when a language dies out.
