Scholars say students need chances to speak in class

Educators and researchers who specialize in the education of English-language learners are putting new emphasis on the importance of teaching oral English.

A conference in Austin about teaching oral language and literacy to English-language learners, held Oct. 5-6 by the National Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English-Language Learners, or CREATE, underscored the scholarly interest in the topic.
