The explicit use of strategies can be helpful for learners when focusing on interlanguage pragmatic development.

Objective: To apply a strategic approach to the development of second language pragmatic skills.

Resources: Strategic Approach to Pragmatics resource sheet

Procedure:

  1. Work as a class to brainstorm situations in which pragmatic knowledge is important. Some specific examples could include:
  • Apologizing for rear-ending a stranger's car
  • A greeting in a grocery store or market
  • Responding to a compliment
  1. Use the previous discussion to have learners select a function and complete the Strategic Approach to Pragmatics resource sheet.
  2. Have learners report their findings to the class to give all a general overview of what each group uncovered.
