Title: 2003 Racial and Gender Report Card:
Body: The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida recently published the "2003 Racial and Gender Report Card: A comprehensive analysis of hiring practices of the National Basketball Asso.; National Football League; National Hockey League; Major League Baseball; Major League Soccer; Women's National Basketball Asso.; NCAA and it's members" by Richard Lapchick. A quote from the report summary: "After years of tracking at least annual incremental progress in previous reports, the 2003 Racial and Gender Report Card covers perhaps the worst overall two-year period of declines for women and, in some cases for people of color, in the report's history. This is a disappointing reversal from the 2001 Report, when historically best hiring records were noted both on the basis of race and gender." Title: National Directory of Teacher Preparation Programs (Preservice and
Body: National Directory of Teacher Preparation Programs (Preservice and Inservice) for Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Students The purpose of The National Directory of Teacher Preparation Programs (Preservice and Inservice) for Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Students is to begin to identify nationally recognized programs of professional teacher preparation (preservice and inservice) that are addressing, promoting and implementing effective professional preparation for teachers who will teach in linguistically and culturally diverse classrooms. The Directory focuses on programs that emphasize multiculturalism, second language learning (ESL and bilingual education)and special education. The directory does not include teacher preparation programs that emphasize a traditional teacher preparation base and do not consider preparation for cultural and linguistic diversity in their programs. The programs identified in the Directory implement a body of special knowledge, skills and processes and experiences that are different from traditional teacher preparation programs. The distinguishing feature of these programs are that they in some way prepare teachers by providing them with an essential knowledge base in preparation for teaching in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms.
