Title: Book: Critical Reflections on Data in Second Language Acquisition
Body:

Critical Reflections on Data in Second Language Acquisition
Edited by Aarnes Gudmestad and Amanda Edmonds
Published by John Benjamins Publishing Company

This edited volume offers critical reflections on an essential component of research method in the field of second language acquisition – data. Scholars working on diverse areas (e.g., pragmatics, corrective feedback, phonology) and approaches (e.g., corpus linguistics, concept-oriented analyses, variationism) have come together to identify challenges researchers face when collecting, coding, and analyzing data and to provide guidance for making advancements regarding these aspects of research method. This volume also showcases three types of critical reflection. One involves building a relevant corpus of published investigations and using that database to identify methodological issues in existing research. Another consists of recoding and reanalyzing published work, before reflecting on the impact that these decisions have on observations made about interlanguage. The third begins with a particular area of or approach to second language acquisition and then offers a critical examination on the challenges that characterize the selected area or approach. Researchers and graduate students alike will benefit from an open discussion on methodological issues that are in need of improvement.

Exploring Language Aptitude: Views from Psychology, the Language Sciences, and Cognitive Neuroscience
Edited by Susanne M. Reiterer
Published by Springer

This book presents original, empirical data from quantitative and qualitative research studies in the field of language learning aptitude, ability, and individual differences. It does so from the perspectives of Second Language Acquisition, psychology, neuroscience and sociolinguistics. All studies included in the book use a similar and uniform layout and methodology. Each chapter contains a study examining factors such as memory, personality, self-concept, bilingualism and multilingualism, education, musicality or gender. The chapters investigate the influence of these concepts on language learning aptitude and ability. Several of these chapters analyze hypotheses which have never been tested before and therefore provide novel research results. The book contributes to the field both by verifying and contesting existent findings and by exploring novel approaches to devising research in the subject area.

Title: Book: The Multilingual Edge of Education

The Multilingual Edge of Education
Edited by P. Van Avermaet, S. Slembrouck, K. Van Gorp, S. Sierens, and K. Maryns
Published by Springer

This book highlights the need to develop new educational perspectives in which multilingualism is valorized and strategically used in settings and contexts of instruction and learning. Situated in the current educational debate about multilingualism and ethno-linguistic minorities, chapter authors examine the polarized response to heightened linguistic diversity and how the debate is very much premised on binary views of monolingualism and multi- or bilingualism. Contributors argue that the diverse linguistic backgrounds of immigrant and minority students should be considered an asset, instead of being regarded as a barrier to teaching and learning. From its title through to its conclusion, this book underlines the current perspective of multilingualism as possessing cutting edge potential for transforming diverse classrooms into more inhabitable, more equitable and more efficiently organized spaces for learning. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in educational linguistics, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, pedagogics, educational studies, and educational anthropology.

The conference considers all aspects of the linguistic and sociolinguistic competences and practices of bi-/multilingual speakers who cross-existing social and linguistic boundaries, adopting or adapting themselves to new and overlapping linguistic spaces. The organizers invite papers in all areas of research in bi-/multilingualism, whether or not linked directly to the overarching conference theme, including, but not limited to, linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, clinical linguistics, education, bi-/multilingual societies.

Submission is already open and will close on 31 December 2018.

Title: Call for Papers: Exploring the Interface of Interlanguage (L2) Pragmatics and Digital Spaces
Body:

From https://journals.equinoxpub.com/index.php/CALICO/announcement/view/236

Call for Papers: Special issue of CALICO Journal
Exploring the Interface of Interlanguage (L2) Pragmatics and Digital Spaces
Guest editors: Julie Sykes and Marta Gonzalez-Lloret

His special issue of the CALICO journal is intended to explore the interface of Interlanguage (L2) Pragmatics and digital technologies. Specifically, it seeks to expand theoretical horizons, report on targeted empirical research, and explore innovative approaches to L2 pragmatics in formal instructional contexts and informal learning in digitally-mediated spaces. The editors encourage authors to take a micro- and/or macro-level approach to L2 pragmatics in their analyses and encourage the expansion of research populations beyond traditional, university-level classrooms. Empirical studies are particularly encouraged and critical review pieces are also welcome.

The editors seek original submissions that represent diverse approaches to interlanguage pragmatics and digital technologies. Approaches may include (but are not limited to):

● New research methodologies in Interlanguage (L2) Pragmatics
● Multilingual pragmatic behavior of digital spaces
● L2 pragmatics in multimodal technological contexts
● Innovative approaches to learning Interlanguage (L2) pragmatics
● The design and empirical investigation of digital tools for the teaching and learning of L2 pragmatics
● Digital networks and Interlanguage (L2) pragmatics
● Pragmatic assessment with digital tools

Each author will be expected to provide a concise description of their theoretical framework, methodological approach (as relevant to the types of the article), critical research findings, implications for the design, implementation, and evaluation of digital tools for the teaching and learning of Interlanguage (L2) Pragmatics.

Abstracts are due by December 1, 2018.

Title: Online Workshop: Meeting the Needs of Heritage and Second Language Learners of Spanish
Body:

Online workshop: Strategies for Teaching Mixed Classes: Meeting the Needs of Heritage and Second Language Learners of Spanish

Presenter: Maria Carreira (co-director of the National Heritage Language Resource Center and professor of Spanish at California State University, Long Beach)
Date: Thursday, November 29, 2018
Time: 7:00 pm Eastern / 6:00 pm Central / 4:00 pm Pacific
Duration: 2 hours
Location: Online

Full description: Mixed classes (classes with heritage and second language learners) are the most common instructional context in which heritage language (HL) learners study Spanish. From a teaching standpoint, they are also the most challenging due to the considerable differences that exist between these two populations of learners. The presenter will discuss a general approach to teaching mixed classes that is responsive to the needs of each type of student and also taps into their complementary skills to foster collaborative learning. Participants will see examples of different types of activities to implement in their mixed classes, and they will also have the opportunity to practice applying the tools of differentiation to advance both of these goals. Participants will receive a handout with a summary of strategies and activity examples, as well as a list of other resources to explore further.
