Title: Language Teacher Symposium: Leveraging the Power of the Language and Intercultural Can-Dos
Body:

From https://cercll.arizona.edu/lates-language-teacher-symposium/

The Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language & Literacy (CERCLL)'s Language Teacher Symposium (LaTeS) series is a biannual day-long symposium at which K-12 language teachers can share ideas and issues that are specific to their community. The fall 2018 LaTes features Jacque Bott Van Houten.

Leveraging the Power of the Language and Intercultural Can-Dos
November 3

The original NCSSFL-ACTFL Can Do statements for Language simplified and clarified goal setting for learning and instruction. The revised version provides a tool that helps everyone—teachers and learners—better understand language progression across the proficiency levels. The new Intercultural Communication Can-Dos reframe how we think about unit organization and lead us in a natural way toward a more PBL-friendly curriculum.

In this workshop we will explore the new Can-Dos, the changes and the new format, the theories upon which they are based, and the examples created for diverse learners. We will engage in activities that increase your knowledge of the ACTFL proficiency scale and how it can be used to assess what learners know about culture through their use of language. You will use the new document to inform your level expectations, unit planning and daily lessons. Finally, you will create a unit overview and support it by developing an activity based on an authentic resource. Join us and see what the powerful new Can-Dos can mean for you and your learners!

Title: Conventiculum Dickinsoniense 2019
Body:

From http://blogs.dickinson.edu/dcc/2018/09/30/conventiculum-dickinsoniense-2019/

Conventiculum Dickinsoniense 2019
July 5-11
Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania

The Conventiculum Dickinsoniense is an immersion seminar designed for those who want to acquire some ability at ex-tempore expression in Latin. A wide range of people can benefit from the seminar: professors in universities, teachers in secondary schools, graduate students, undergraduates, and other lovers of Latin, provided that anyone who considers applying has a solid understanding of the grammatical essentials of the Latin language. A minimum requirement for participation is knowledge of Latin grammar and the ability to read a Latin text of average complexity – even if this reading ability depends on frequent use of a dictionary. But no previous experience in speaking Latin is necessary. Sessions will be aimed at helping participants to increase their ability to use Latin effectively in spoken discourse and to understand others speaking in Latin. After the first evening reception (in which any language may be spoken), Latin will be the language used throughout the seminar. Participants will be involved in intensive activity each day from morning until early evening (with breaks for lunch and mid-afternoon pauses). They will experience Latin conversations on topics ranging from themes in literature and art all the way to the routines and activities of daily life, and will enjoy the benefits of reading and discussing texts in the target language. Activities will involve both written and spoken discourse, both of which engage the active faculties of expression, and each of which is complementary to the other. The seminar will not merely illustrate how active Latin can be a useful tool for teachers, it will show how developing an active facility in Latin can directly and personally benefit any cultivator of Latin who wishes to acquire a more instinctive command of the language and a more intimate relationship with Latin writings.

The deadline for applications is May 1, 2019.

Title: Playaling: Captioned Videos in Arabic
Body:

From https://mailchi.mp/qfi/arabic-k-12-bulletin-may-1-993297?e=feb2c9cab6

Playaling is a new resource for learning Arabic (MSA, Egyptian, and Shamy for now) with videos and interactive captioning. Here is the summary from the Arabic K-12 Teachers Network newsletter:

"Jordan Gerstler-Holton is excited to introduce http://Playaling.com, a new resource for learning MSA and dialects (just Egyptian and Shamy for now). Jordan says: "As a former student of Arabic (including CASA in Cairo), I wanted to address the dearth of decent resources currently available. Playaling makes authentic Arabic content accessible via interactive captioning. To use the interactive feature, put your mouse over the transcription in one of the videos.

"'This is just the beginning. We're uploading new content and improving user experience. In terms of development, next on our to-do list is detailed metadata for pop up dictionary entries, including information on particles of speech, gender, grammatical concepts, contextual info, and more. Longer-term goals include flashcards, games, and interactive activities using content from the videos.'

"Credit for this amazing resource goes to Jordan Gerstler-Holton, Muhammad Sabri, Nourhan Wageeh, Chelsea C. Villareal, Dima Ulyanets, Angie Mouki, Brooke Sauro, Mahmoud Algherbawi, Hanan Shawky, Bisan Mohammed, Mariam Enany, Paige Milligan, and Elisabeth Boeck."

Playaling is available at http://playaling.com/
